Job Corps’ Able Seaman – Tongue Point

Job Corps’ Able Seaman program is offered through the Inland Boatmen’s Union. Participants in this career pathway will work towards certification as an able seaman whose duties include standing watch on deck, working on equipment maintenance, and performing most of the labor required on a ship.

Students in Seamanship are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Understand theoretical principles
  • Perform basic skills in logistics, equipment operations and deckhand responsibilities 

CAREER OPTIONS

As a credentialed, entry-level worker, students completing the Seamanship program find careers as able seaman, or deckhand seaman.

REQUIREMENTS

Before entering the program, students must:

  • Complete all required activity in the Career Preparation Period, including Career Exploration and Career Success/Workplace Skills.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
